Read 1000 Books

Read 1000 Books Before Kindergarten

The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Program encourages you to read 1,000 books with your child before they enter school. Read any book with your newborn, infant, and/or toddler and you will jump start their literacy skills and prepare them for success in school. Doing this easy thing will help them develop a lifelong love of reading.

There are three simple steps to the program:

  • Read together and keep track of your child's reading. You can read whatever you want and can repeat books as many times as your child wants.
  • Once you finish 100 books, come in with your reading log. For every 100 books you read your child will earn a prize.
  • When you reach 1,000 books, come in for a diploma and final reward.

This program ends when your child starts kindergarten. Take as long as you need and enjoy bonding through reading! You can also check out for more information and tips on reading with your child.

Come to the Children’s Reference Desk for more information about how to get started!
